Assam’s Youth Relieved as Higher Secondary Exams Canceled Ahead of Panchayat Polls
Assam State School Education Board Cancels Remaining HS First Year Examinations Amid Panchayat Elections
In a statement released by the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), the education minister, Ranoj Pegu, announced that the remaining subjects of the Higher Secondary First Year Examinations, 2025, will be cancelled due to the ongoing Panchayat elections. According to the board, teachers will be engaged in election duties and pre-election activities, making it difficult to hold the exams before the poll process is completed.
As a result, the board has decided to allow students who appeared for the March 2025 exams to take the HS Final Examination in 2026. The decision was made after considering the schedule announced by the State Election Commission, which indicates that the election process may continue up to May 20, 2025.
The election, which will be conducted in two phases across 27 districts, is set to take place on May 2 and May 7, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 11. Over 1.80 crore voters will exercise their franchise in 25007 polling stations during the election, which will be held at the Gaon Panchayat, Aanchik Panchayat, and Zilla Parishad levels.
The nomination filing process will run from April 3 to April 11 for both phases, with the scrutiny of nomination papers scheduled for April 12, and the candidates’ withdrawal date set for April 17. The Assam State Election Commissioner, Alok Kumar, announced the election schedule in a statement.
The cancellation of the remaining HS First Year Examinations is a significant development in the education sector, particularly for students who were preparing for the exams. However, the board’s decision to allow them to take the HS Final Examination in 2026 provides some relief to the students. The board’s decision to prioritise the election process over the exams is an indication of the importance attached to the democratic process.
As the state gears up for the Panchayat elections, students and teachers alike are awaiting the outcome of the board’s decision. The election, which is seen as a crucial step in the democratic process, promises to be an exciting and competitive affair. With over 1.80 crore voters exercising their franchise, the result will be a reflection of the people’s choice.
