Expert Panel Triumphantly Certifies New Pamban Rail Bridge as Structurally Safe
The newly constructed Pamban rail bridge has been officially deemed structurally safe by a high-level committee appointed by the Indian Ministry of Railways. Measuring 2.08 kilometers, this engineering marvel has passed rigorous scrutiny, with assurance that it complies with Indian Railway Standards. The five-member committee, which conducted an inspection earlier in January, includes top officials such as the Principal Executive Director of Bridges, representatives from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the Chief Bridge Engineer from Southern Railway, a Director from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, and an external expert from IIT-Roorkee.
The panel’s report, released on January 11, 2025, highlights that the bridge has been meticulously designed to endure an annual traffic load of 50 gross million tonnes, ensuring a design lifespan of 100 years. The bridge’s structural integrity meets the relevant provisions of the Indian Railway Standards Steel Bridge Code, accounting for fatigue and ensuring its safety for train operations. The panel emphasized, “Thus, the bridge is structurally safe to serve the intended purposes.”
A specific focus was given to the bridge’s 72.5-meter-long vertical lift span, a critical component for maritime navigation. This design has undergone thorough assessment and approval by esteemed institutions such as IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay, aligning with both Indian and Euro codes. The committee noted, “The design of the lift span has been reviewed properly based on Indian and Euro codes, assessed for fatigue.”
Quality control was further prioritized with welding tasks overseen by competent professionals, and independent verification conducted by the Welding Research Institute, Tiruchi, under BHEL’s guidance. While safety standards have been paramount, the speed on this lift span is capped at 80 kmph due to the curvature at the Rameswaram end.
This series of evaluations was initiated following adverse comments from the Commissioner of Railway Safety, A.M. Chowdhary, during his statutory inspection. Although the bridge was cleared for operation, Chowdhary pointed out “glaring lapses” in the project’s planning and execution, a concern raised due to the bridge’s non-RDSO foreign design.
Moving forward, the high-level technical panel has recommended ongoing collaboration between consultants, RDSO, and academic institutions to streamline the clearance process of such sophisticated infrastructure projects. This partnership aims to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into iconic structures, accelerating their development timelines.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to officially inaugurate the new Pamban rail bridge on April 6, marking a significant milestone in India’s railway infrastructure.
