India Comments: Former Manipur Chief Minister Warns ‘Yunus’ of the Perils of Un restrained Speech
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has slammed Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus over his comment on India’s northeast region, calling it “provocative and irresponsible.” Singh, in a statement, accused Yunus of attempting to frame the northeast as a strategic pawn to serve Bangladesh’s geopolitical ambitions.
Singh, a strong advocate for India’s unity and territorial integrity, warned Yunus that making reckless comments about a nation like India can be counterproductive and even lead to regrettable consequences. He condemned Yunus’ remarks in the strongest possible terms, emphasizing that India’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable.
Assam Chief Minister also weighed in, labeling Yunus’ statement “offensive” and “condemnable.” He pointed out that the comment underscores the vulnerability of the “Chicken’s Neck” corridor, a critical passageway linking the northeast to the mainland. The Chief Minister called for the development of more robust railway and road networks, as well as alternative routes connecting the northeast to the mainland.
Singh and the Assam Chief Minister are not the only ones concerned about the strategic significance of the northeast region. Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has, on multiple occasions, emphasized the region’s potential as a gateway to India for China’s economic influence. Yunus has also urged China to extend its economic influence to Bangladesh, which he claims will benefit India’s northeast states.
The northeast region is composed of seven sister states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. These states are landlocked, with no direct access to the sea. Yunus’ suggestion that China’s engagement could extend to these states, through Bangladesh, has come under fire from Indian officials.
