Heartbreaking Devastation: Entire Myanmar Communities Flattened by Earthquake, Aid Teams Report
In the aftermath of a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, urgent humanitarian needs are escalating. The quake has left a devastating impact, flattening entire communities and displacing countless families. Julia Rees, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Myanmar, reported that children and families are now sleeping in the open, having lost their homes. “The need for assistance is growing by the hour,” Rees said, reflecting the dire situation on the ground. Many children are suffering from shock, struggling to cope with the loss of their homes or loved ones, and some have been separated from their families.
Since the earthquake struck the Mandalay and Sagaing regions, as well as Nay Pyi Taw and southern Shan state, the reported death toll has surged to approximately 2,000, according to the local military junta. Even more individuals remain unaccounted for, while thousands are sustaining injuries. The urgency of the situation was stressed by Rees, who warned, “The window for lifesaving response is closing,” as the affected regions grapple with severe shortages of clean water, food, and medical resources. Aid workers face formidable challenges as they operate in areas plagued by power outages and lack of sanitation, often sleeping outside with the communities they aim to support.
International rescue efforts are intensifying, led by local and global teams from China, India, Russia, Thailand, and Bangladesh, with a focus on central Myanmar, where persistent aftershocks exacerbate the crisis. Marcoluigi Corsi, the UN’s top humanitarian official on the ground, recently returned from Nay Pyi Taw, described conditions as desperate, with widespread lack of electricity and access to clean water. “There is no running water,” he noted, as communities endure the oppressive summer heat, reluctant to return indoors amidst ongoing aftershocks.
Hospitals are overwhelmed, struggling to accommodate the influx of patients. Dr. Fernando Thushara of the World Health Organization in Myanmar noted critical shortages of medical supplies and frequent electricity disruptions in healthcare facilities, exacerbated by malfunctioning generators and fuel shortages. Thushara warned of imminent health risks, emphasizing that a deficiency in clean water and proper sanitation could spark outbreaks of infectious diseases. Past cholera cases in Mandalay highlight these vulnerabilities, with concerns that diseases such as dengue, hepatitis, and malaria might proliferate if not swiftly addressed.
Myanmar’s current ordeal compounds existing struggles. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees spokesperson Babar Baloch highlighted the ongoing socio-political turmoil since the 2021 military coup, in addition to past natural disasters like cyclones and floods. Prior to the earthquake, the affected regions hosted 1.6 million displaced people, underscoring the “double tragedy” unfolding. Corsi emphasized the impaired resilience of communities, already strained by previous crises. Prior to these recent events, nearly 20 million people in Myanmar needed humanitarian aid, with over 15 million facing food shortages.
Despite the pressing humanitarian needs, the UN’s $1.1 billion appeal for Myanmar is significantly underfunded, with only 5% of it met just a few months into the year. “This is time…for the world to step up and support the people of Myanmar,” Corsi remarked, calling for immediate international assistance to address the compounded crises the nation is facing.
