Peace Talks Emerge at Kangpokpi: Community Demands Preconditions for Ceasefire
Amid Growing Tensions, Kuki-Zo Leadership Lays Down Preconditions for Ceasefire Ahead of SCHEDULED Talks
In a bold move ahead of the scheduled peace talks on April 5, the Kuki-Zo leadership in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District, has laid down three non-negotiable preconditions for any cessation of hostilities. The announcement came during a high-level consultation meeting at the KBC Centre Church Hall, Kangpokpi, convened by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi District, which saw participation from prominent Kuki-Zo organizations, including the Kuki-Zo Council, Sadar Hills Chiefs’ Association, Kuki Inpi, student bodies, women’s organizations, and tribal representatives.
According to sources, the three preconditions outline a strict no-cross-movement policy, requiring the restriction of Meitei individuals in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas and vice versa. A second condition demands the initiation of a formal and meaningful dialogue process during the ceasefire period. Finally, the leadership has called for a minimum six-month ceasefire to facilitate negotiations.
The declaration comes as the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) prepares for talks between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities in New Delhi on April 5. With tensions still running high, the Kuki-Zo leadership has taken a firm stand, stating that a ceasefire will only be possible if these conditions are met.
As the world awaits the outcome of the scheduled talks, the Kuki-Zo leadership’s bold stance serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by thefluttering communities. With the international community watching with bated breath, it remains to be seen whether the parties will be able to find common ground, or if the longstanding issues will continue to simmer, threatening to boil over at any moment.
In the face of uncertainty, the Kuki-Zo leadership’s preconditions offer a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution, but only if the other parties are willing to engage in meaningful dialogue and find a middle ground. As the clock ticks down to the scheduled talks, one thing is clear: the stakes are higher than ever, and the world holds its breath in anticipation of the outcome.
