Revitalizing Hope: Kebang Sole Village Transforms Blighted Dumping Ground into Thriving Sustainable Urban Oasis
Transformation of Villages: Turning Trash to Treasure in Arunachal Pradesh
In the picturesque Kebang Sole village, located in the Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, a once-notorious open dumping site has been converted into a thriving sustainable vermicompost unit (SVU). This remarkable transformation is a result of the collective efforts of the villagers, led by Circle Officer Niyang Pertin, in collaboration with the Block Mission Management Unit (BMMU), Pangin unit, and the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ArSRLM).
The initiative, part of the Siang district’s "Swachata Hi Seva" drive, focuses on promoting sustainable waste management practices and creating a cleaner, more environmentally friendly future. The project has not only enhanced the village’s aesthetic appeal but also provided an opportunity for the local community to generate income through the sale of vermicompost, a natural, eco-friendly fertilizer.
The SVU, now managed by a local Self-Help Group (SHG), was made possible thanks to a donation of Rs. 1.50 lakh from MLA and Minister Ojing Tasing. The project’s success has seen SHGs earning a steady income by supplying vermicompost to customers within and beyond the district. This innovative approach not only fosters entrepreneurship and economic growth but also promotes eco-friendly agricultural practices, ultimately improving the livelihoods of community members.
The project’s origins can be traced back to 2023, when Circle Officer Niyang Pertin provided vermicompost kits, raw materials, earthworms, tools, and training to six selected SHGs as a pilot project in Pangin circle. Since then, the initiative has expanded to 12 villages across the district, with the goal of transforming them into "Clean Model Villages."
This remarkable transformation is a testament to the tireless efforts of local leaders and authorities in promoting sustainable waste management practices and empowering communities to take charge of their environmental future. As Arunachal Pradesh continues to push for green initiatives, the Kebang Sole village’s success serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through collective action and dedication to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
