Apollo Cancer Centres Launches ColFit to Combat Colorectal Cancer

Apollo Cancer Centres has introduced ColFit, a comprehensive screening program aimed at preventing colorectal cancers (CRC) and reducing treatment costs. The initiative is designed to improve survival rates, as CRC is a significant concern globally. According to the World Health Organization, around 1.8 million new cases are identified annually, with the disease claiming over 800,000 lives each year.

In India, the incidence rate is particularly alarming, with 7.2 cases per 100,000 men and 5.1 per 100,000 women, resulting in approximately 70,000 new cases annually, compared to around 35,000 in the United States. Senior consultant – colorectal and robotic surgeon, Dr. Venkatesh Munikrishnan, emphasizes the importance of early detection, stating, "The most common symptoms related to CRC are rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, weight loss, and anaemia. If these symptoms persist for more than six weeks, it’s necessary to consult a doctor."

Often, patients ignore rectal bleeding, attributing it to piles or simply due to embarrassment. However, with the ColFit program, such delays can be averted, and the spread of cancer can be prevented, resulting in saved lives. Risk factors for CRC include a low-fibre diet, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and genetic predispositions.

ColFit offers a faecal immunochemical test, a non-invasive and highly accurate screening tool to detect hidden blood in stool, an early indicator of CRC. According to senior consultant – colorectal and robotic surgeon, Dr. Senthil Kumar Ganapathi, nearly half of CRC cases are detected at an advanced stage, highlighting the need for early screening. To address this, ColFit will be available across Apollo Hospitals, starting with Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai, Teynampet, and Vaanagaram.

The program’s launch comes at an opportune moment, with the global healthcare community recognizing the importance of CRC prevention and early detection. Apollo Cancer Centres’ initiative sets an exemplary standard, as it prioritizes patient well-being and accessible healthcare. As Dr. Karan Puri, CEO of APCC, notes, "Our aim is to make high-quality cancer care accessible to all."

The ColFit program marks a significant step forward in the fight against CRC, offering a concerted effort to combat this disease. With its comprehensive screening protocol, patient education, and easy access to quality healthcare, ColFit is poised to make a tangible impact on the lives of those affected by CRC.
