Mizoram’s Top Leader Faces Court Cross-Examination in Defamation Cases: A Crucial Test of the Law
Mizoram Chief Minister Under Fire as He Faces Nearly Four-Hour Grilling in Court
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma faced a tough test on Wednesday, March 26, as he was cross-examined for nearly four hours in the Judicial Magistrate Court. The grueling session saw his defence lawyers quiz him extensively on two criminal complaints filed against him.
The first case, lodged on May 9, 2023, accuses Spa Jongte, a worker from the MNF party, of running a fake Facebook profile under the name “Tv U Hranga” to spread defamatory claims against Lalduhoma. The allegations stem from comments made about a 2013 shooting incident at Sihhmui, Tlawng River. Lalduhoma was grilled by his defence lawyers on the details of his statements and the allegations.
The second case, filed in 2020, revolves around the accusations from the Dawrpui Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Aizawl, which claimed the Chief Minister was involved in an extramarital affair. During the court’s scrutiny, defence counsels probed Lalduhoma on the specifics of his account.
Throughout the cross-examination, the court’s examination focused intently on Lalduhoma’s testimony, with defence lawyers pushing him for clarity on his statements and allegations. Although the details of the cases remain contentious, the high-stakes courtroom drama set the stage for a long-standing political controversy in Mizoram.
