Guwahati: In a significant breakthrough, the Assam Police, with the assistance of the West Bengal Police, have arrested two prime accused in a massive online trading scam that has swindled numerous individuals in the Barak Valley. Mohammad Shakir Ahmed and his brother, Mohammad Jabir, were apprehended from Mukundapur in Kolkata by a special task force from the Badarpur Police.
The operation was triggered by a tip-off and a formal complaint filed at the Sribhumi Police Station, where Ahmed is believed to have orchestrated the fraudulent scheme. The duo was brought in for interrogation at the Superintendent of Police’s office, where they are being questioned about their involvement in the scandal. Investigations have revealed that Ahmed and his network duped investors across the Barak Valley with promises of lucrative online trading returns, after which they vanished with the substantial sums. The arrested accused allegedly used the embezzled funds to finance a lavish lifestyle, which included the purchase of high-end luxury vehicles worth Rs 60-70 lakh.
The police are also on the lookout for another key accused, Rajdeep Deb, who is absconding and has been linked to the scam. According to reports, Deb maintained an elaborate online trading office within his residence in Maizdihi, Sribhumi, and lived an extravagant lifestyle. The police are working to track down Deb and other potential co-conspirators to uncover the full extent of the scam and recover the defrauded funds.
Despite the significant financial losses, many victims have not yet filed official complaints, leaving the police to probe further to uncover the truth. The ongoing investigation aims to bring those responsible to justice and help the victims to recover their losses.
The Assam Police’s swift action and coordination with the West Bengal Police have sent a strong message to fraudsters that their activities will not be tolerated. The success of this operation will undoubtedly serve as a warning to potential scammers, and the police will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that such crimes are brought to a halt.
