Empowering Tiny Wings: Numaligarh Celebrates World Sparrow Day
Assam: Environmental Awareness Programme Held to Mark World Sparrow Day
Yesterday, Bordihingia Lower Primary School in Numaligarh hosted an environmental awareness programme to commemorate World Sparrow Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about the declining sparrow population. The event brought together a panel of experts, including retired principal Jatin Kakati of Kamargaon Girls’ High School, who highlighted the significance of the day and the role of society in conservation. Kakati emphasized the importance of collective action to protect the species.
Maheswar Robidas, a respected speaker at the event, shed light on the alarming decline of sparrows in rural areas, mainly due to the rapid disappearance of traditional bamboo houses and the reduction of food sources. He called for concerted conservation efforts to safeguard the species, sparking lively discussions among the attendees.
The programme was also attended by retired teacher Mukheswar Saikia, former gaon panchayat president Lukeswar Hazarika, and Aaranyak Project Officer Arif Hussain. Mahen Doley, Principal of Bordihingia Lower Primary School, moderated the event, ensuring a productive and engaging discussion.
The speakers’ collective message was clear: it is crucial for society to take responsibility for the declining sparrow population. With their habitats under constant threat and their food sources dwindling, it’s essential to work together to protect these tiny, yet significant, birds.
World Sparrow Day is observed annually on March 20th, a time to reflect on the impact of human actions on the natural world. As the planet continues to grapple with environmental challenges, events like this one serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action and the need for a united effort to protect our natural world.
