Devastating Overnight Deluge: Torrential Rain and Thunderstorms Paralyze Hyderabad with Severe Waterlogging
Hyderabad residents woke up to a much-needed respite from the relentless heat as heavy rain swept through the city in the early hours of Saturday, March 22, 2025. However, the refreshing change in weather also ushered in a series of challenges, including significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions, which affected daily routines across the city.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Hyderabad experienced substantial rainfall, with the University of Hyderabad registering the highest at 54.5 mm by 7 a.m. Other areas also recorded notable precipitation levels, with Vivekananda Nagar receiving 50.8 mm, followed by Madhapur with 48.8 mm, Borabanda 48.5 mm, and Rajendra Nagar at 47.5 mm. Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Kapra, and Cherlapally were not spared the deluge, recording 45.8 mm, 39.3 mm, 39 mm, and 38.8 mm, respectively.
The city faced severe waterlogging, particularly affecting the Kondapur underpass leading to Gachibowli and the Lingampally railway underbridge (RUB), where commuters experienced significant delays. In response, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, alongside traffic police, sprang into action to manage the congestion and mitigate the impact on residents. Despite their efforts, traffic movement remained sluggish throughout Saturday morning, causing frustration among those attempting to navigate submerged roads.
In addition to grappling with flooded streets, Hyderabad’s residents encountered power outages during the early hours of the morning. Many took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their concerns and share experiences, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue. The outages further compounded the challenges posed by the inclement weather, underscoring the need for improved infrastructure to handle such situations.
Amid the ongoing weather woes, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast predicting a cloudy sky over Hyderabad, with possibilities of light rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds later in the evening. This forecast suggests that while residents may experience a temporary respite from the harsh weather conditions, they should stay prepared for further rain-related disruptions.
Efforts are underway by local authorities to address the immediate concerns raised by the heavy rains, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in mitigating the adverse effects of such weather events. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather developments and plan their activities accordingly to minimize inconvenience.
As Hyderabad navigates these weather-related challenges, the experience serves as a reminder of the city’s resilience and the need to invest in infrastructure that can better handle extreme weather conditions. Addressing the root causes of such disruptions is essential in ensuring that similar situations in the future are managed more effectively, minimizing the impact on daily life.
Residents, city officials, and stakeholders are encouraged to work collaboratively, fostering a proactive approach to building a more resilient urban landscape capable of withstanding the uncertainties posed by changing weather patterns. This collective effort will contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of life for all those residing in this vibrant city.
