Corruption Scandal Rocks Assam Assembly: Ashok Singhal Under Fire for Allegations
Assam’s Politics in Disarray as Assembly Witnesses Voracious Protests
Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly failed to conduct meaningful proceedings on Friday as opposition parties, including the Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M), and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, protested vehemently against what they perceived as rampant corruption in the state’s irrigation and urban affairs departments, previously handled by Minister Ashok Singhal. The controversy has thrown the House into chaos, with Speaker Biswajit Daimary forced to adjourn proceedings twice and suspend an MLA for his outburst.
The leader of the opposition, Debabrata Saikia, led the push for an adjournment motion to discuss the alleged corruption, which he claimed was on a massive scale. Daimary, however, rejected the motion, citing the scheduled Finance Bill discussion, but promised to “look into” the demand for a House Committee. Scenting an opportunity to expose the government’s malpractices, the opposition parties staged a dramatic protest in the Well of the House, brandishing placards and chanting slogans.
The Speaker’s attempts to maintain order by adjourning the proceedings for 10 minutes and then another five minutes only led to further uproar. Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi pressed Deputy Speaker Numol Momin for a clear answer on the formation of the House Committee, but was met with Momin’s decision to suspend him for 10 minutes, citing procedural rules. The outcome was an impasse, with both sides refusing to budge.
The potential implications of this dispute are far-reaching, threatening to undermine the credibility of the Assam government and the integrity of its institutions. As the argument rages on, the people of Assam will be anxiously awaiting a resolution that addresses their pressing concerns about corruption and the governance of the state.
