Exciting Transformation: NHAI Commences Crucial Vehicle Underpasses and Flyovers to Alleviate Edappally Junction Congestion
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a significant infrastructure development project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion at the bustling Edappally Junction in Kerala. This project involves the construction of a pair of flyovers parallel to the Edappally-Palarivattom bypass and the Edappally-Varapuzha NH 66 corridor. The flyovers, each extending 650 meters, will feature a 50-meter-wide underpass at their base, strategically designed to improve traffic flow in one of the region’s busiest intersections where NH 66 and NH 544 meet.
Located near the Oberon Mall on the southern flank of the junction and by the LuLu Group office on the northern side, the flyovers are set some 700 meters from the heart of Edappally Junction. Under these flyovers, vehicle underpasses (VUPs) will be constructed to facilitate seamless 180-degree turns for vehicles, streamlining traffic movement. This development aims to enhance the current traffic situation by allowing vehicles on NH 544 to cross the intersection without enduring long traffic lights, although it necessitates a roughly 2 km detour utilizing the new VUPs.
The construction responsibility rests with the same firm tasked with the Edappally-Muthakunnam NH 66 widening project, ensuring consistency in infrastructural standards. Scheduled for completion by March 2026, this project will redefine the local commute by significantly reducing delays at the junction. Official sources report that preliminary work for one of the VUPs is already underway near Oberon Mall.
A proposed 16-km elevated highway, which NHAI has planned from Edappally to Aroor, is also anticipated to commence from the new underpass site at Oberon Mall. This new highway is expected to further ease traffic pressure, acting as a crucial link around the city.
For motorists, the revamped traffic flow means changes in habitual routes. Vehicles coming from Kalamassery on NH 544, aiming to turn right towards Varapuzha, will initially turn left at the junction, navigate the VUP near Oberon Mall, and then proceed directly to Varapuzha. Similarly, drivers from the Mamangalam side heading to Vyttila will also initiate their turn from the left at the junction, using the LuLu Group office underpass to proceed to their destination. Additionally, those traveling from Vyttila will retain the ability to make a right turn towards Aluva.
The decision to build VUPs instead of a full underpass connecting the NH Bypass with NH 66’s northern side reflects considerations to minimize land acquisition, a choice influenced by the dense urban landscape and high traffic volume of Edappally. The design aims to maximize efficiency, integrating with the existing roadway network while accommodating future growth.
