Manipur Police Crackdown on Militants Seizes Large Cache of Arms, Explosives, and Equipment
In a major crackdown on militant activities, Manipur Police arrested three cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (MFL) (KCP) on March 20, during an operation in Lilong Chajing Mamang Leikai under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal West District. The arrested individuals, identified as Aheibam Gandhi alias Nanao (35), Thongam Naoba Meitei (21), and Ningthouba Momocha Singh, were accused of involvement in abduction for ransom. The security forces seized a four-wheeler and four mobile phones with SIM cards from their possession.
The police operation was part of a larger effort to combat militant activities in the region, which resulted in significant recoveries of weapons, explosives, and other materials linked to such activities. In a separate operation near Apunlok Canal, between Kangchup and Singda Kadang under Lamsang Police Station, Imphal West District, security forces recovered a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) with a magazine, one pistol with a magazine, 10 cartridges, 2 36 HE grenades without ignitor sets, 2 military helmets, 2 bulletproof jackets, 4 locally made iron bulletproof plates, and 2 Baofeng wireless handsets without batteries.
Another operation in the Yairipok Gwarok area under Yairipok Police Station, Thoubal District, led to the recovery of 2 7.62 mm SLRs, each with an empty magazine, and 20 rounds of 0.303 live ammunition. A search in K. Geljang and K. Patbung villages under Kangchup Police Station in Kangpokpi District resulted in the seizure of 2 7.62 mm rifles with magazines, 3 7.62 mm live rounds, 1 0.303 bore rifle with a magazine, 1 locally made 0.315 bore pistol with a magazine, 1 0.22 caliber air pistol with an empty case, 1 Pompi gun, 9 live 12-bore rounds, 5 Baofeng radio sets, and 3 radio set chargers.
In Jiribam District, security forces uncovered a significant cache of explosives at Uchathol Mayai Leikai under Jiribam Police Station. The seized items included 100 sticks of Stardyne-901 explosives, classified as Class II CAT-ZZ, weighing approximately 12.5 kg, along with 20 live rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and 2 plastic bags. Further operations in the Moulzawl and Binselu Rubber Plantation areas of Jiribam District resulted in the discovery of 5 locally made single-barrel guns, 1 locally made 12-bore rifle, 1 locally made pistol, 2 Pompi guns, 6 Pompi bombs, 1 improvised explosive device (IED) with remote and electrical initiation, and 2 gelatin sticks.
These successful operations demonstrate the police’s commitment to combating militant activities in the region, and their efforts to keep the public safe from the threat of violence. As the investigation continues, it is expected that more details will emerge, shedding light on the extent of the police’s operations and the extent of the militant activity.
