Revolutionary Carpooling App: Cyberabad Police Set to Transform Commute After Chief Minister’s Bold Initiative

In an effort to mitigate Hyderabad’s mounting traffic congestion, the Cyberabad police have joined forces with leading carpooling platforms sRide and Quick Ride to launch innovative ride-sharing solutions. This initiative comes on the heels of a recent recommendation by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who advocated for carpooling as a strategy to address the city’s pressing traffic issues. The ambitious project, aimed particularly at the IT sector workforce, targets a hefty 30% reduction in private vehicle usage, which translates to nearly 300,000 fewer cars clogging the streets daily.

The new policy is poised to significantly slash carbon emissions—a reduction of approximately 750 tonnes each day and 15,000 tonnes monthly—contributing positively to the region’s environmental health. The Chief Minister, in a recent Telangana Assembly session, highlighted the urgency of this project due to the rapid increase in vehicle numbers, with over 1,600 new cars being added daily. “Concentrated efforts are needed to streamline traffic, and encouraging carpooling among citizens is a viable solution,” he stated, emphasizing the need for vehicles with four to five passengers to be prioritized on roads.

The policy, conceived in collaboration with the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) and inspired by successful international models, aims to boost vehicle efficiency and reduce transport costs. Former Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis, now Hyderabad Joint CP (Traffic), noted a strong interest in carpooling among employees during consultations with corporations and rideshare providers. A state-backed policy, he believes, could alleviate lingering concerns over safety, privacy, and financial security, which have historically impeded the growth of carpooling in the region.

SCSC CEO Naved Alam Khan detailed the non-profit, cost-sharing model of this initiative, which eliminates profitability obstacles for corporates. He revealed ongoing discussions to either introduce a new app through the Cyberabad traffic police’s platform or modify existing platforms to meet the proposed guidelines, ensuring commuter safety and privacy. Joint CP (Traffic) Gajarao Bhupal confirmed that the Traffic Department is in discussions with the State Transport Department to resolve any legal hurdles and expedite the project’s launch.

The draft policy outlines specific guidelines under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, exempting private vehicles used for carpooling from being classified as commercial, thereby avoiding public transport regulations. Vehicle owners are restricted to offering two carpooling rides daily, with fares strictly covering associated costs such as fuel and maintenance. Further, routes must be pre-determined, and picking up passengers randomly is strictly prohibited. Comprehensive insurance coverage, including passenger liability, is mandatory for vehicles participating in the scheme.

To encourage participation, the policy offers incentives like toll and fuel rebates for car owners and an array of rewards for ride-takers. Companies engaging in carpooling initiatives also benefit by enhancing their corporate image and fulfilling corporate social responsibility targets focused on environmental sustainability.

As Hyderabad braces for this progressive venture, stakeholders expect not only a smoother traffic flow but also a substantial environmental improvement, underscoring the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development. With implementation on the horizon, residents and corporations alike anticipate a transformative impact on how the city navigates its bustling roads in the years to come.
