India’s Mega Plan: Centre to Pump in Rupees 3 Lakh Crore to Build World-Class Highways in Assam
Assam Set for a Massive Infrastructure Overhaul as Government Commits INR 3 Lakh Crore for World-Class Highway Projects
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced a significant investment of INR 3 lakh crore in Assam to construct world-class national highways, aiming to elevate the region’s infrastructure standards to match those of the United States. The ambitious project is expected to give a massive boost to the region’s economy, create jobs, and enhance connectivity.
Gadkari, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, assured that his ministry has sufficient funds for road projects and emphasized that Assam’s highway network will undergo a complete transformation. The minister highlighted several major road projects, including the Guwahati Ring Road, expected to be completed by December 2027 at a cost of INR 5,800 crore. The Brahmputra River Tunnel in Dibrugarh, estimated to cost INR 12,000 crore, is currently in the approval process. Additionally, an elevated highway over Kaziranga National Park is set to begin soon after receiving Cabinet approval, with no funding constraints.
Gadkari reiterated the government’s commitment to developing infrastructure in the region, stating that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Northeast is receiving top priority. In response to concerns from opposition MP Mallikarjun Kharge, the minister acknowledged that the Modi government has significantly improved Karnataka’s road network since 2014, but acknowledged issues with land acquisition and environmental clearance in the state.
The minister also addressed a request from Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar for highway connectivity to Tithana village in Haryana, responding positively to the request. With these investments, Assam is poised for a massive infrastructure transformation, solidifying its position as a key economic hub in the Northeast.
The ambitious projects are expected to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance connectivity in the region. As the government commits to developing the region’s infrastructure, Assam is likely to become a hotbed of economic activity, attracting businesses and investments from across the country. With the Asian Development Bank and other international organizations also backing the project, the region is likely to witness significant transformations in the coming years. The development is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, reducing transportation costs, increasing trade, and boosting the region’s overall growth.
