Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed his joy and relief on Wednesday, hailing the safe return of Indian astronaut Sunita Williams and her crew from the International Space Station (ISS). This marks the end of a nine-month ordeal that raised concerns over their health and well-being. Sunita, who is the second Indian astronaut to reach space, was part of a four-member crew that conducted scientific experiments on the ISS for 287 days.

The journey hit a snag due to a technical glitch, leaving the crew stranded. Reports emerging from NASA and the press highlighted the risks to their health, sparking widespread concern. Despite these challenges, the astronauts continued to carry out their duties, showcasing their professionalism and skill. The good news finally arrived on Wednesday, as the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft splashed down safely in the Gulf of America, off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida, at 0327 IST.

The triumphant moment marked the successful return of the ISS crew, comprising NASA’s Nick Hague, Sunita Williams, and Butch Wilmore, along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. Their journey ended with a safe landing at 5:57 p.m. EDT, followed by a brief recovery period before returning to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston for a homecoming reunion with their families.

Chief Minister Stalin congratulated the crew and those involved in their safe return, saying, “The news of their safe landing has brought immense joy and happiness for all of us.” The successful operation was a testament to the collaborated efforts between NASA, SpaceX, and other key stakeholders.
