Peruvian Fisherman Rescued After 95 Days Adrift in Pacific Ocean
Maximo Napa, a Peruvian fisherman, was rescued on Wednesday after spending a staggering 95 days lost at sea, surviving on an unlikely diet of roaches, birds, and sea turtles. The 45-year-old was rescued 680 miles off the coast of Ecuador, heavily dehydrated and in critical condition.
Napa set out for a two-week fishing trip from Marcona, a town on the southern Peruvian coast, on December 7. However, stormy weather forced his boat off course, leaving him adrift in the Pacific Ocean. His family launched a search, but Peru’s maritime patrols were unable to locate him until the Ecuadorian fishing patrol made the discovery.
In an emotional reunion with his brother, Napa revealed that he had been forced to eat anything he could find to survive, including insects and small animals. “I did not want to die,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “I ate roaches, birds, the last thing I ate was turtles.” Despite the hardships, Napa credited his family, particularly his two-month-old granddaughter, with keeping him strong. “I thought about my mother every day,” he added, his voice cracking with emotion.
Napa’s mother, Elena Castro, had begun to lose hope, praying daily for her son’s safe return. However, his daughters remained optimistic, constantly reassuring her that he would come back. “I told the Lord, whether he’s alive or dead, just bring him back to me, even if it’s just to see him,” she said in an interview with TV Peru.
After a preliminary medical check-up in Paita, Napa is scheduled to be transported to Lima for further treatment. His miraculous rescue has sent shockwaves through the Peruvian community, with messages of support pouring in for the resilient fisherman. As he begins his recovery, Napa’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of hope, perseverance, and the unwavering support of loved ones.
