West Bengal Gets a New Wave of Leadership: BJP Appoints 25 Organizational District Presidents
West Bengal BJP Makes Significant Structural Changes Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections, 17 New Faces Take Charge as District Presidents
The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a list of 25 organizational district presidents, including 17 new faces, in a move seen as a significant step-up in preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections. The development comes as the party looks to strengthen its foothold in the state.
According to party insiders, the 17 new district presidents include 19 from South Bengal and six from North Bengal. The party has a total of 43 organizational districts, which cover all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies and 294 Assembly constituencies in the state. Sources close to the development reveal that the names of the remaining 18 organizational district presidents will be announced shortly.
Under the party’s “one person, one post” policy, district presidents who have become MLAs will have to relinquish their posts. This move is expected to create new opportunities for others to take charge. For instance, in Cooch Behar, Abhijit Burman has been named the new district president, replacing Sukumar Roy, who has become an MLA. Similarly, in Arambagh, Sushanta Bera has taken over as district president from MLA Biman Ghosh.
The changes are not limited to mere replacements, however. Party sources indicate that the decision to replace some district presidents was taken due to their poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections. In Maldaha Uttar, Pratap Singh has taken over from Ujjal Dutta, while in Jangipur, Subal Chandra Ghosh has been replaced by Subal Chandra Ghosh. In Barasat, Rajib Poddar has been named the new district president, replacing Tarun Kanti Ghosh.
Another region that has seen significant changes is Hooghly, where Gautam Chatterjee has taken over as district president, replacing Tushar Majumdar, allegedly due to a winning Lok Sabha seat being lost due to an alleged conflict between former MP Locket Chatterjee and Majumdar. In Bankura, Prosenjit Chatterjee has replaced Sunil Rudra Mondol, while in Purulia, Shankar Mahato has taken over from Vivek Ranga, who was removed allegedly due to infighting in the unit.
When asked about the changes, BJP MP and spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya told The Indian Express, “These are internal party decisions. What the party thought was good, has been done.” The development is seen as a significant step towards revamping the party’s organizational structure in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
