Manipur Police Crackdown: 5 Active Insurgent Cadres Busted for Extortion and Illegal Activities
In a major crackdown on illegal activities, Manipur police have arrested five individuals linked to insurgent groups KCP (PWG) and UPPK, accused of extortion and criminal operations across the region. The daring operation saw the apprehension of three key operatives from the United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) and two members of KCP (PWG).
Authorities have launched a concerted effort to shut down the illegal activities of the arrested operatives, who allegedly used various means, including extortion, to allegedly amass wealth. On the first day of the operation, security forces arrested Shandham Romen Singh, a 39-year-old active member of KCP (PWG), from Samurou in Imphal West District. During the operation, 11 incriminating demand letters were recovered, which were reportedly being used to extort money from individuals and businesses. Romen was allegedly using these letters to demand payment from unsuspecting victims, often under the threat of violence.
In another related incident, Sorokhaibam Inaoton Singh, a 38-year-old KCP (PWG) operative, was apprehended near the RIMS Main Gate in Lamphel. According to sources, Inaoton was involved in extorting money from government officials and civilians, using a mobile handset seized from his possession for criminal purposes.
The third significant arrest came with the apprehension of three active members of UPPK from Langol Type-II in Imphal West. The trio, which included Ngangbam Bishan Meitei (24), Ashangbam Manikanta Singh (37), and Sorokhaibam Nganthoi Singh (23), were allegedly running an unauthorized tribunal, extorting money from the general public by conducting illegal trials. During the operation, the police recovered two four-wheelers, three mobile handsets, and other miscellaneous items from their possession.
Security forces have charged the arrested individuals with multiple counts, including extortion, criminal conspiracy, and other related offenses. As the full scope of their illegal activities comes to light, it is clear that the police worked tirelessly to disrupt the criminal networks and restore peace to the region. The recent arrests are seen as a major success in the fight against organized crime and a testament to the police’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting the citizens of Manipur.
