Empowering Women, Empowering World: Tripura Celebrates International Women’s Day on March 13
Tripura Gears Up to Celebrate International Women’s Day with a Focus on Empowerment and Eradicating Social Ills
As the world marks International Women’s Day on March 8, the Tripura government is set to launch a series of initiatives aimed at empowering women and eliminating social evils. The state-wide celebrations, themed "Launch of a Collective Movement to Eliminate Child Marriage and Other Social Ills from the State and Empower Women," will culminate in a grand event on March 13 at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala.
Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy emphasized the state’s commitment to bridging the gender gap, highlighting the importance of ongoing awareness campaigns against child marriage and gender-based injustices. Since March 1, sensitization programs have been conducted in brick kilns and tea gardens, engaging district-level child welfare and protection committees. The Education Department has also organized workshops in schools, educating students and guardians on the harmful effects of child marriage.
The state has made significant strides in supporting working women, with a sanctioned budget of Rs 114 crore for the construction of 10 working women’s hostels. Additionally, the government has provided assistance to 34,974 pregnant women under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana and 21,551 women under the Chief Minister Matru Pushti Upahar Yojana. Furthermore, the government has granted sponsorship and foster care allowances to 1,373 children.
To equip women with essential skills and boost self-reliance, the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) has devised a series of impactful initiatives, including self-defense training sessions and the felicitation of outstanding self-help group members. A special exhibition will highlight their achievements. Public awareness campaigns on cyber security and women’s rights will also be launched, recognizing exemplary women officers and achievers from various fields.
Local governance bodies are actively involved in spreading awareness, engaging local representatives and the general public. From March 1 to March 8, panchayats and municipal wards have been conducting awareness programs, while the Labour Department has extended these efforts to tea estates, brick kilns, and industrial hubs. The Agartala Municipal Corporation is conducting workshops dedicated to women’s rights and empowerment.
The state’s efforts have yielded tangible results, with 1,373 children benefiting from sponsorship and foster care allowances, and 34,974 pregnant women receiving assistance under various government initiatives. The government’s comprehensive strategy combines welfare measures, awareness drives, and empowerment initiatives, aiming to create a more equitable society where women and girls can thrive, free from discrimination and societal constraints.
