GMC Cracks Down on Unauthorised Parking Fees; Approved Tickets Needed
Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) announced new measures on Friday, June 26, 2026, to curb overcharging and improve transparency in parking and market fee collection across the city. The directives, unveiled at a meeting with parking and market leaseholders, come after repeated complaints from citizens and traders that attendants and fee collectors were demanding payments above official civic rates. GMC said the steps are intended to strengthen accountability and stop unauthorised collections.
Under the new rules, every person collecting parking or market fees on behalf of leaseholders must wear a designated uniform while on duty so the public can easily identify authorised personnel. Collectors will also be required to use only receipt books approved and verified by the corporation, allowing citizens to confirm legitimate payments and preventing the circulation of unauthorised receipts. In addition, all fee-collecting employees will be issued official identity cards to reduce the risk of impersonation and give commuters and traders a quick way to verify collectors before paying.
“We strongly believe that if these measures are implemented, the allegations of excess fees being collected will be reduced drastically. This will lead to more transparent and orderly parking services, while creating a healthy and convenient environment for businessmen and customers,” GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said. The corporation added that safeguarding public interest remains its highest priority and that it will continue monitoring implementation to ensure compliance by all leaseholders and fee collectors operating under GMC.
