"Mastering the Flow: Brahmaputra Board Unveils Strategic Plans to Harness North East and North Bengal’s Vital Rivers"
Brahmaputra Board Prepares Master Plans for Management of NE, North Bengal Rivers
The Brahmaputra Board, a statutory body responsible for managing water resources in the northeastern region and northern parts of West Bengal, has identified 70 rivers in its jurisdiction and is working on preparing master plans for their better management, including controlling erosion and siltation. This move aims to mitigate the impact of devastating floods and landslides that have plagued the region in the past.
At the 84th meeting of the Brahmaputra Board in Agartala, officials from nine basin states, including eight from the northeast and one from West Bengal, discussed strategies for managing rivers in the region. The meeting was attended by members of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry, which is responsible for the state’s water resources.
"We are working on various plans for the development of nine river basins under our jurisdiction," said Ranbir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board. "We are also updating master plans for three rivers in Tripura, including the Feni, Gomti, and Muhuri rivers, with a focus on preventing erosion and siltation."
The master plan for the Feni river, which flows through southern Tripura and Bangladesh, was approved with an allocation of Rs 3.5 crore. The plan aims to mitigate the risk of heavy rainfall, which caused widespread flooding and destruction in Tripura last year.
According to the Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Saha, the state suffered damages of around Rs 15,000 crore due to the devastating floods, landslides, and subsequent displacement of thousands of people. The Brahmaputra Board’s master plans are designed to prevent such disasters in the future by conducting studies and analyses of three major rivers in Tripura.
