In a recent controversy, Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe claimed that posts within the undivided Shiv Sena were secured through bribes. This statement was made at the 98th All India Marathi Literary Festival in Delhi, where Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar was the reception committee chairman. In response, Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has urged Pawar to protest against Gorhe’s remarks, questioning his silence on the issue despite his leadership role at the event.
Gorhe, who joined the Eknath Shinde faction after the Shiv Sena split in June 2022 and holds the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, alleged that offering expensive gifts, such as Mercedes cars, was necessary to obtain a post in Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. She also criticized Thackeray for his reluctance to engage with party leaders.
Reacting to her claims, the Uddhav Thackeray faction refuted these allegations, highlighting Gorhe’s multiple appointments as a Legislative Council member, even amid internal resistance. Uddhav Thackeray dismissed her accusations, asking for evidence of the supposed car transactions and criticizing those who actually own luxury cars for not contributing to welfare initiatives like the Ladki Bahin scheme.
The political fallout from Gorhe’s comments has prompted Raut to question the appropriateness of political discourse in a literary forum. He has demanded clarification from Usha Tambe, chairperson of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal, the festival’s organizers, regarding the perceived political misuse of the event’s platform.
In a subsequent clarification, Gorhe insisted that her statements were based on personal experiences and observations, reflecting practices within the party’s operations. Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar is expected to address the media regarding the controversy from his Mumbai residence shortly.
