Pakistan’s Bold Move: Unveiling an Ambitious Master Plan to Revitalize Hindu Temples and Sikh Gurudwaras Since Partition
Pakistan’s Initiative for Hindu Temples and Sikh Gurdwaras: A Rejuvenation Master Plan
In a significant move to preserve its multicultural heritage, Pakistan has formulated a comprehensive master plan aimed at renovating and beautifying Hindu temples and Sikh gurdwaras across the nation. This initiative, announced during a meeting of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) on February 23, will see an investment of one billion Pakistani rupees for the enhancement of these minority religious sites. ETPB, established in 1960, is a pivotal institution in safeguarding the properties of Hindu and Sikh communities who migrated to India during the 1947 partition.
Syed Attaur Rehman, the head of ETPB, emphasized the allocation of substantial funds for the upkeep of these sacred sites, indicating a significant stride in fostering religious inclusivity. The master plan also entails the appointment of a project director dedicated to overseeing renovation and operational activities, including those related to the highly regarded Kartarpur Corridor project.
Board Secretary Farid Iqbal underscored potential amendments to the ETPB’s development strategies to bolster revenue generation. He highlighted that underutilized lands are now earmarked for development, which is anticipated to significantly enhance the board’s financial resources. The meeting involved active participation from both Hindu and Sikh community members, alongside government and NGO representatives, reflecting a unified approach towards sustaining Pakistan’s diverse cultural tapestry.
ETPB’s strategic initiative is rooted in historical treaties like the Nehru-Liaqat Pact and the Pant Mirza Agreement, which aimed to protect minority rights, ensuring that the legacy of these communities continues to thrive. This master plan underscores the Pakistani government’s commitment to preserving the nation’s pluralistic identity, promoting harmony and respect among its varied religious communities.
