Inspiring Recovery: How Physiotherapy Transformed Lives of Guillain-Barré Syndrome Survivors | Health and Wellness News
At 25, Sunil, an engineering student, has begun breathing independently and eating soft foods after experiencing a sudden collapse and muscle weakness. Initially feeling weak at a friend’s wedding, Sunil soon lost the ability to swallow or breathe unaided, symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This rare neurological disorder, often triggered by bacterial or viral infections, was linked to Campylobacter jejuni in Pune, but commonly follows respiratory infections across India.
Dr. Sudhir Kothari explains that GBS causes muscle weakness, tingling, and possible paralysis as the immune system attacks nerves. Sunil’s recovery involved intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and plasma exchange treatments, aimed at halting this immune response. Severe cases like his often require ventilators. Dr. Aditya Bari, treating Sunil, performed a tracheostomy to aid his breathing after his diaphragm weakened.
GBS patients, including 52-year-old trucker Hari and children in Sassoon Hospital’s pediatric unit, face varied symptoms and challenges. Dr. Rohidas Borse emphasizes daily physiotherapy for recovery, which includes exercises and techniques to maintain muscle flexibility and prevent complications. Dr. Neha Pelapkar highlights a rehabilitation plan involving electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, and exercises to rebuild strength, balance, and coordination.
Mental health support is crucial in GBS care, according to Dr. Aarti Kinikar. Family education, support groups, and counseling play vital roles in recovery. Patients, particularly children, should be encouraged at their own pace without pressure.
One determined patient, a 40-year-old woman, demonstrates resilience, showing improvement in a fortnight despite ongoing challenges. Her story, like Sunil’s and others, underscores the criticality of comprehensive care and support in overcoming GBS.
