Urgent Alert: Meghalaya Mandates Drug Scans for Incoming Vehicles – A Bold Step for Safer Roads!
The government of Meghalaya has implemented stringent measures to tackle the rising drug trafficking issue in Shillong, which is fast becoming a drug hotspot. To combat this, vehicles entering the state will now be subjected to high-tech scanning at entry points to detect narcotics. The state has approved the acquisition of advanced scanner vehicles equipped with cutting-edge technology, with one already in the procurement process and another to be deployed near the Assam-Meghalaya border at Ratacherra village. Paul Lyngdoh, the state’s social welfare minister, highlighted the initiative’s goal of preventing drugs from entering the state.
In an additional measure to curb illegal activities within the Shillong cantonment area, a security survey will be conducted by the Shillong Cantonment Board in coordination with the East Khasi Hills District Police. This initiative aims to identify drug trafficking hotspots and other unlawful activities. Enhanced surveillance will be achieved through strategically installed CCTV cameras. Furthermore, a dedicated K9 unit, consisting of 10 sniffer dogs and trained handlers, will be deployed. The cantonment authorities are exploring potential funding sources, such as Smart City funds, to facilitate the project’s execution.
The plan, which aims to improve public safety and strengthen law enforcement within cantonment zones, will be rolled out in phases, starting with a survey of high-risk areas. Joint inspections by security teams will ensure effective implementation, strengthening the state’s resolve to address drug-related issues.
