Arunachal Musician Unveils Captivating Nyokum Anthem: A Powerful Fusion of Tradition and Modern Sound
Arunachal Pradesh’s celebrated guitarist and singer, Takar Nabam, has launched his latest track, “Nyokum Sode Hayi Ku,” which pays homage to the Nyokum festival. This new release blends traditional Arunachalee folklore with modern music genres like pop, R&B, and funk, offering an innovative take on the region’s cultural heritage.
At 35, Takar has already performed internationally, including in the USA, Indonesia, and Bhutan, and seeks to reinterpret his homeland’s traditions for a global audience. In an interview with India Today NE, he expressed that the song celebrates communal gathering during the Nyokum festival and emphasizes the importance of protecting Mother Earth.
Lyrics for the track were crafted by Taba Yall Nabam, a respected singer-songwriter, who underscored the festival’s importance for the Nyishi community, highlighting its role in promoting well-being and bountiful harvests. The song invites all to revel in the joy of Nyokum.
Raised on rock music and international hits, Takar is pioneering the evolution of Arunachal’s folk music. His five-year collaboration with folk fusion artists like David Angu and Yami Puri has infused global, jazz, and pop elements into traditional songs, aiming to introduce them to wider audiences, including Bollywood.
“This project marks my first collaboration with my sister-in-law, Taba Yall Nabam,” Takar said, hoping to see their work propagate across India. Takar’s career includes performances at prominent festivals such as NH7 Weekender and venues like AntiSocial in Mumbai. He actively participated in international events, including a performance in the United States in 2019.
Reflecting on his musical journey and return to Arunachal, Takar shared how “Nyokum Sode Hayi Ku” serves as a reminder for the Tani descendants to remain rooted amidst modernization. Available on all major streaming platforms, the track is supported by a lyric video with English translations on Takar’s YouTube channel.
