Historic Victory: Kuki and Zomi Tribes Unite for Peace, Surrender 16 Weapons
Manipur Disarmament Initiative Gains Momentum as Tribal Communities Surrender Weapons
In a significant move toward peace, tribal communities, including the Kuki and Zomi, surrendered 16 weapons in Churachandpur district, Manipur, after an appeal from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The Governor urged the return of illegal arms to curb anti-social activities, warning of strict legal consequences for non-compliance.
The surrender took place on February 22, 2025, in Tuibong Village, where leaders from the Zomi and Kuki communities, assisted by the Assam Rifles, Police, CRPF, State Intelligence Agencies, and local administration, handed over the weapons. This effort marks a vital step in the broader peace initiative supported by the central government.
Among the surrendered arms were an M-16 rifle, a 7.62 mm SLR, two AK rifles, three INSAS rifles, two grenade launchers, and other assorted firearms and ammunition. This demonstrates a strong community commitment to disarmament and peacebuilding.
The Assam Rifles and authorities have been working closely with local leaders to address security concerns, reinforcing the safety of those participating in the disarmament process and fostering an environment conducive to further arms returns.
Governor Bhalla’s call for all communities to return looted and illegal weapons within a week underscores the urgency of restoring peace in the region. This collaborative disarmament initiative highlights the commitment of Manipur’s people and authorities to achieve lasting harmony and stability.
With the success of this surrender, hopes are bolstered for continued progress in the region’s peace efforts.
