Tragic Discovery in Namchi: Heartbreaking Suspected Suicide of Elderly Man in Sikkim
In a tragic incident in Gupti, Turuk, under Namchi district, Sikkim, a 75-year-old man, Ram Prasad Rai, was found dead in an apparent suicide on Tuesday, February 19. The elderly man, son of the late Sakha Dhan Rai, was discovered hanging inside his residence around 8:30 am. The distressing discovery was reported by Nar Bahadur Rai, a resident of Melli Bazar, who filed a formal complaint with the Melli Police Station at approximately 11:00 am.
Responding to the report, Melli Police Station registered an Unnatural Death case, numbered 03/2025, in line with Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. An investigative team was promptly dispatched to the scene, which is situated roughly 26 kilometers north of the police station. Upon arrival, authorities found Rai hanging with a ceremonial scarf, known as a Khada, tied to a rod inside his room. Investigators gathered photographic evidence and sketched a rough layout of the scene for records.
A magisterial inquest was led by BDO Sumbuk, Shri L.B. Pradhan, in line with Notification No. 15/Home 2024, dated March 2, 2024. Conducted in the presence of witnesses, the inquiry revealed no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Following the completion of all requisite legal procedures at the scene, the body was transported to the District Hospital in Namchi for a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death. Authorities have stated that the case is still under investigation as they continue to seek clarity on the circumstances leading to this tragic event. The community, meanwhile, is left grappling with the shock of the incident, awaiting further updates from the ongoing inquiry.
