Heartwarming Rescue: Endangered Bat Species Safely Released Back Into the Wild
An endangered bat species, commonly referred to as “Shekpi,” has been successfully rescued and released into its natural habitat in Manipur after receiving medical treatment. The Indian flying fox, scientifically known as Pteropus medius and also called the greater Indian fruit bat, is critically endangered in this region. Historically found in abundance, the species now benefits from legal protection under Schedule II of the 2022 amended Wildlife Protection Act.
The rescue operation was undertaken by People for Animals (PFA), Manipur, with assistance from the United National Liberation Front – Pambei (UNLF-P) cadres, who found the bat at their Yathibi camp in Thoubal district. After regaining strength, the bat was safely returned to the wild.
PFA emphasized the importance of not hunting these bats for meat, citing potential zoonotic disease transmission risks from consuming or handling bat meat, which can be transferred from animals to humans. The organization called for increased awareness and protection measures to ensure the survival of this endangered species.
