Shocking Arrest: Rare Leopard Skin and Bones Seized in Dibrugarh
In a significant operation targeting wildlife smuggling, authorities in Dibrugarh, Assam, arrested two individuals and seized a leopard’s skin and bones in the Moran area. The suspects, Madhurajya Sonowal and Pankaj Baruah, both hail from Moran. Sonowal was apprehended by the Customs Department in the Ghaspuria area as he attempted to sell the leopard parts. During questioning, he disclosed that Baruah supplied him with the animal parts, promising a sum of Rs 2 lakh for the transaction.
A subsequent joint operation by the Moran police and the forest department resulted in Baruah’s arrest in the Nahorani area. Interestingly, Baruah recently gained publicity after capturing a black panther and a leopard using a self-crafted cage, which he then handed over to the forest department. However, Sonowal insisted he was unaware of the leopard’s killing, noting that Baruah consumed its flesh.
Currently, both suspects are under police custody, facing charges related to wildlife trafficking. This operation underscores the persistent threat of wildlife smuggling in the region and highlights the collaborative efforts of customs and law enforcement agencies in combating such illegal activities.
