Guwahati, Feb 13: In a notable development under Operation Praghat, Assam’s Special Task Force (STF) has successfully apprehended a pivotal member of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The arrest was part of a coordinated effort involving police units from Assam, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, and took place in Chennai. The individual, Abu Salam Ali from Dhubri’s Bilasipara, was captured after thorough surveillance and extensive intelligence-sharing across multiple states.
This marks the 15th arrest under the ongoing Operation Praghat, aimed at dismantling extremist networks throughout the region. Credit for the arrest was shared with the police forces of the collaborating states by Guwahati Police Commissioner and STF Chief Partha Sarathi Mahanta. He emphasized that this capture is a significant milestone in their operations, which have now led to the detention of 15 ABT-connected members.
Ali’s affiliation extends beyond the ABT; he is also a member of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMU) and is suspected of orchestrating activities threatening India’s national security. His close ties with previously captured operatives from Kokrajhar and Dhubri suggest coordinated efforts to destabilize the region.
Having evaded authorities since December 17, 2024, Ali is believed to have been actively involved in planning attacks to incite unrest and violence. Investigations reveal his collaboration with other extremists, including Nur Islam Mandal and Shahinur Islam, to bolster the activities of these prohibited organizations.
This arrest closely follows the recent capture of Nasim Uddin SK on February 4, suspected of similar extremist involvement. The ongoing efforts of Operation Praghat highlight the state’s commitment to counterterrorism and maintaining national security.
