Revitalizing Assam’s Healthcare: Empowering Lives with 400 New Government Doctors Amidst Crisis
Guwahati, Feb 13: In response to the scarcity of medical professionals in government hospitals, the Assam government has announced plans to recruit 400 new doctors to bolster healthcare across the state. Health Minister Ashok Singhal stated that advertisements for these positions will be released shortly.
During a recent comprehensive review of the health and family welfare department, Singhal introduced several initiatives aimed at enhancing the state’s healthcare system. Following the successful National Deworming Day on February 10, Assam has targeted administering albendazole tablets to 8,774,548 children by February 17. This mission encompasses children aged one to 19 years in schools and Anganwadi centres. Within just two days of the campaign, 3,232,988 children received tablets across 41,192 schools and 61,738 centres statewide.
As part of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme and a concurrent 100-day TB Elimination Drive, 4.3 million people were tested for tuberculosis in the last month, leading to the detection of 4,000 new cases. Singhal also reported on the U-WIN portal, initiated in January, which vaccinated 21,210 children, achieving a 42 percent success rate alongside continued manual registrations.
Furthermore, the health minister addressed grievances received via a WhatsApp helpline, which highlighted issues like medicines’ unavailability in government hospitals, doctors’ reluctance to prescribe generic medicines, and critical drugs missing from the essential medicines list. The government has pledged to ensure nearly all essential medicines are stocked in hospitals within the coming 10 days and intends to expand the essential drugs list with additional important medications.
