The Hague, Feb 8: The International Criminal Court (ICC) has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose sanctions on the Court, describing it as a threat to its independence and impartial judicial work. The ICC’s statement criticized the executive order targeting its officials, sparking concern from the Netherlands and the European Union (EU). Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp expressed regret on social platform X, emphasizing the ICC’s essential role in combating impunity. Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa warned that sanctioning the ICC undermines the international criminal justice system.
The European Commission acknowledged the ICC’s critical significance in upholding international justice. A Commission spokesman, cited by Xinhua news agency, noted that the EU will monitor the executive order’s implications and consider further responses. The U.S. sanctions involve financial penalties and visa restrictions for individuals assisting the ICC in its investigations against American citizens and allies. Trump issued a stark warning of “tangible and significant consequences” for those participating in such investigations.
These actions by the Trump administration follow the ICC’s November issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The ICC claimed there were reasonable grounds suggesting criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza by the two Israeli figures.
