Urgent Plea: Civil Society Groups Urge Mizoram CM to Protect Lengpui Airport from IAF Control – Heartfelt Northeast News
In a significant development, the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), comprising major civil society organizations and student bodies led by the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), has appealed to Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma to reconsider the state’s decision to transfer Aizawl’s Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The request, made during a recent meeting, reflects a widespread concern over maintaining local control of the airport.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma acknowledged the uniqueness of Lengpui Airport, which is the only airport in India owned and managed by a state government. He cited financial constraints as the primary reason for the proposed handover but reassured the NGOCC that the state government is keen to retain ownership and management of the airport. To address financial challenges, Lalduhoma mentioned plans to seek assistance from the finance commission to enhance the airport’s facilities and runway.
The Mizo National Front (MNF) has also expressed its opposition to transferring the airport to the IAF, highlighting the political weight behind the NGOCC’s plea. Meanwhile, Chief Minister’s Finance Adviser, TBC Lalvenchhunga, who chairs the Working Committee on Lengpui Airport, confirmed that the cabinet has not yet reached a final decision regarding the handover. He noted that the draft Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) required for the transfer is yet to be finalized.
This development underscores the broader debates about local governance, infrastructure management, and strategic partnerships in Mizoram. As discussions continue, stakeholders remain divided, reflecting both concern for economic feasibility and the desire to maintain local autonomy over critical infrastructure.
