Meghalaya Govt Champions NorthEast United FC’s Vision: Transforming Shillong into the Epicenter of Football Passion – CEO Mandar Tamhane’s Bold Announcement
Shillong, Feb 4: The Indian Super League (ISL) is gearing up for its inaugural matches in Meghalaya, with NorthEast United FC set to face former champions Mumbai City FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on February 7. Following this debut, NorthEast United will also host Bengaluru FC and East Bengal FC on February 21 and March 8, respectively. Fans are eagerly anticipating the chance to see Indian football stars like Sunil Chhetri, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Naorem Mahesh Singh in action.
NorthEast United FC CEO, Mandar Tamhane, explained the club’s decision to bring ISL matches to Shillong after witnessing massive local support during the Durand Cup semifinal against Shillong Lajong last year. “The online tickets sold out in 12 minutes, and queues stretched five kilometers for physical tickets,” he noted, highlighting the region’s fervent football culture.
Tamhane praised the collaboration with the Meghalaya government, which has supported the effort to establish Shillong as India’s football capital.
Redeem Tlang, a notable NorthEast United FC forward from Shillong, expressed excitement about the league’s arrival in his hometown. Having over 100 ISL appearances, Tlang sees this as a special moment for Meghalaya and urges local support to boost the team.
Tlang’s journey began with Shillong Lajong FC in 2013. Reflecting on his roots, he described football as a fundamental part of Shillong’s culture, played passionately across generations in every corner of the city.
Beyond the immediate excitement, Tlang believes the ISL’s presence in Shillong will inspire young footballers and advance the sport’s development. “Exposure to professional football can inspire future generations,” he stated, emphasizing the positive impact on grassroots football.
As anticipation builds for ISL’s debut in Shillong, Meghalaya is poised to highlight its rich football heritage on a national stage, solidifying its reputation as a passionate football hub.
