Breaking: Two WC and NNPGs Emerge Amidst Ongoing Division – Unveiling the Turmoil
Leadership Dispute Deepens Division Within Naga Political Groups
DIMAPUR, JANUARY 31 (MExN): In the ongoing saga of leadership splits within Naga political factions, two separate groups are now claiming control over the Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs), intensifying the existing rift. A press release from the Media Cell of the WC, NNPGs announced the appointment of General (Retd) MB Neokpao Konyak, President of GPRN/NSCN (U), as the new Convener. Supporting him will be Ato Kilonser P Tikhak and Ato Kilonser Col (Retd) Isak Sumi as Working Conveners. This leadership team is expected to drive efforts towards resolving the longstanding Indo-Naga political conflict, with a tenure of three years, subject to review.
Simultaneously, another statement from N Kitovi Zhimomi, signing as the Convener of a different faction of WC, NNPGs, disputes the formation of this new committee. Zhimomi’s group asserts its formation on December 13, 2016, through the alliance of six Naga revolutionary groups, along with the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) and the Nagaland GB Federation. Zhimomi maintains that this original committee successfully concluded talks with the signing of the Agreed Position on November 17, 2017, and awaits final agreement with the Government of India since talks ended on October 31, 2019.
Zhimomi’s statement also suggests no opposition to any new negotiations proposed by the group led by Neokpao Konyak and its members, except that they weren’t part of the initial Agreed Position. The faction led by Zhimomi reiterates its steadfastness and commitment to the Agreed Position, highlighting Zhimomi’s continued leadership as pivotal until an agreement between the Government of India and the Nagas is finalized.
This ongoing leadership dispute marks another chapter in the complex dynamics within Naga political movements as they seek a resolution to the decades-long Indo-Naga conflict.
