Tragic Mahakumbh Mela Stampede: Gaurav Gogoi Urgently Calls for Investigation into Shockingly Poor Management
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has urgently called for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic stampede at the Mahakumbh Mela, attributing the disaster to poor management and negligence. Expressing his deep sorrow, Gogoi extended his condolences to the bereaved families, stating, “Distressed to hear about the tragic news of the stampede from the Mahakumbh. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.” He criticized the authorities for their ineffective crowd management, remarking on the shocking reality that devotees seeking divine blessings in Prayagraj were met with such disarray.
Gogoi emphasized the need for immediate action, insisting on a “thorough investigation into the matter” and accountability for those at fault. His statements align with growing concerns over the handling of the massive religious event, where the sheer volume of attendees necessitates strict safety protocols to avert such tragedies.
According to officials, the stampede, which occurred on January 29 at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and injured 60 others. The incident took place in the early hours as millions of pilgrims converged at the Sangam to partake in a holy dip during Mauni Amavasya, considered one of the most auspicious days of the festival. DIG Vaibhav Krishna reported at an evening press conference that 25 victims have been identified, with efforts ongoing to identify the remaining five.
In response to the tragedy, the Assam government announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Niti Ranjan Pal, a businessman from Hailakandi district who perished in the incident. The disaster highlights the critical need for effective crowd control measures to ensure the safety of attendees at such monumental gatherings.
