Tragic Loss: Beloved Assam Businessman Among 30 Victims in Heartbreaking Maha Kumbh Stampede – Northeast News
A tragic incident at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj claimed the life of an Assam businessman, among 30 others, in a devastating stampede. The deceased, 63-year-old Nitiranjan Pal from Hailakandi district in Assam’s Barak Valley, was attending the event with his family. The tragedy unfolded around 2:30 am on a Wednesday during the ‘Amrit Snan’ ritual on Mauni Amavasya, known for attracting millions of pilgrims eager for a holy dip at the Sangam.
The chaos ensued as the massive crowd surged forward, leading to the fatal stampede that left over 60 individuals injured alongside the fatalities. Pal’s family, who were present during the event, expressed distress over the lack of police presence at the site as they desperately sought help. After searching for him for several hours, they tragically found Pal in critical condition. Despite being swiftly transported to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Hailakandi Superintendent of Police, Leena Doley, confirmed Pal’s death, based on information received from the Uttar Pradesh Police. She assured that arrangements were underway to airlift Pal’s body back to Silchar, expected by Wednesday or Thursday. Authorities are completing necessary formalities to ensure the timely return of the deceased to his hometown.
The stampede at one of India’s most significant religious gatherings has cast a shadow over the event, prompting concerns regarding the safety measures in place for managing such massive congregations of people. As investigations continue, the incident highlights the crucial need for enhanced crowd control and emergency response strategies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Pal’s untimely demise has deeply affected his family and the community in Assam, as they mourn the loss amidst what was meant to be a spiritual journey. His death further underscores the risks associated with large-scale religious festivals that attract global attention.
