Historic Moment: Assam CM Triumphantly Unfurls Tricolour in Former ULFA Stronghold, Dibrugarh!
In a significant departure from tradition, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised the national flag on Republic Day at Dibrugarh, historically a hub for militancy and a stronghold of ULFA-I. This marked a shift from the usual celebrations held in Guwahati, spotlighting Dibrugarh’s remarkable transformation from conflict to peace. The Khanikar Parade Ground served as the epicenter of this year’s celebrations, symbolizing resilience and change in a district still classified as a “disturbed area” under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed pride in this shift, noting Dibrugarh’s journey from militancy to hosting full-scale national celebrations. The decision to hold the event in Dibrugarh underscored the progress toward peace and normalcy in the region.
Despite ULFA(I)’s call for a boycott and a “total strike” from midnight to 6 PM on the day of the event, security measures were meticulously planned. Tight security included manned inter-district boundaries, monitored riverine routes, increased patrols by RPF and GRP, and coordinated efforts by the Army, CRPF, and police. Superintendent of Police V.V. Rakesh Reddy highlighted the comprehensive anti-sabotage checks and house-to-house surveys to ensure safety. Around 400 additional personnel from other districts were deployed to reinforce local security forces.
The successful hosting of Republic Day celebrations in Dibrugarh reflected a broader narrative of resilience against militancy, with the Tricolour flying high in a region once consumed by conflict. This event stands as a testament to Assam’s evolving socio-political landscape and the aspirations of its people. Such a milestone emphasizes Assam’s commitment to development and stability, positioning Dibrugarh as a beacon of transformation in the state’s collective journey toward peace.
