Crucial Funding Delay Sparks Frustration: Dimapur’s Multi-Sports Complex Dreams on Hold
On January 24, Chümoukedima witnessed the inauguration of the Sammogooting Stadium, a new public ground-cum-football field, by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. The stadium, costing Rs 9 Crores, is dedicated to the people of Chümoukedima, Niuland, and Dimapur, located within the Chümoukedima Deputy Commissioner’s office complex. The construction was completed five months ahead of schedule by JK Construction at a cost of Rs 9,51,766, reflecting efficient project management.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Rio addressed the setbacks in the construction of the much-delayed Multi-Disciplinary Sports Centre (MDSC) in Dimapur. Initiated in 2006 with a budget of Rs 60 Crores from the erstwhile Planning Commission, the project has faced significant delays and financial hurdles. With the introduction of the NITI Aayog and the subsequent shift in funding protocols, the project’s completion saw prolonged impediments. However, the state government has sourced alternative funds to resume construction, with aspirations of establishing the largest sports complex in Nagaland.
Highlighting historical significance, the Chief Minister remarked that the name “Sammogooting” was selected to honor the site’s colonial legacy as the first administrative headquarters of the British in the Naga Hills District, now known as Chümoukedima. He expressed the government’s vision of replicating similar sports facilities across other districts to foster unity and development within the Nagas.
Furthermore, he emphasized Chümoukedima’s promising future, describing it as the “Land of Opportunities.” He advocated for recognizing unrecognized villages in the district through established government procedures to further development goals and community cohesion.
Through these initiatives, Chief Minister Rio aims to inspire growth, unity, and opportunity within Nagaland, reinforcing his government’s commitment to infrastructure and community development.
