Outrage Erupts Over ‘Shocking Misuse’ of Funds: Oppn Slams AAP, Punjab Police for Arvind Kejriwal’s Security Luxury
Following the withdrawal of Arvind Kejriwal’s security detail by the Punjab Police due to objections from the Delhi Police and directives from the Election Commission of India, political leaders in Punjab have criticized the Aam Aadmi Party and questioned the allocation of security resources. The Punjab Police had provided additional security personnel for Kejriwal, despite him already having Z-plus security from the Delhi Police, which includes around 60 personnel.
Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa expressed concern over the Punjab Police’s focus on Kejriwal’s security while citizens in Punjab face threats from gangsters, highlighting recent incidents such as the Jaintipur grenade attack. He urged the Punjab Police to prioritize the state’s residents and questioned why ordinary citizens are not adequately protected against threats.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira called for Arvind Kejriwal to reimburse the expenses incurred for his Punjab-provided security, labeling it a misuse of public funds. He criticized the decision to grant Z-plus security to Kejriwal by the Punjab administration, given his existing protection in Delhi, and urged transparency regarding past beneficiaries of Punjab Police security.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also condemned the allocation of security resources to non-Punjabi individuals such as Bibhav Kumar, a former aide to Kejriwal, while Punjab faces its own security challenges. He called for a focus on the state’s welfare rather than catering to Delhi’s political figures.
The Punjab DGP, Gaurav Yadav, defended the initial deployment of security for Kejriwal based on threats received. However, upon the Election Commission’s orders, the Punjab Police ceased their involvement, continuing coordination with the Delhi Police to ensure Kejriwal’s safety. The AAP has accused the BJP of manipulating security matters for political gain, although official statements maintain adherence to security protocols. This issue reflects the ongoing complexities of security management for prominent political figures in India, particularly during election periods.
