Heartbreaking Loss: Tragic End for Indian Fisherman Who Perished in Pakistan Jail After Completing Prison Term
Indian fisherman Babu, who was detained by Pakistani authorities in 2022, has died in Karachi’s prison despite having completed his sentence, as reported by sources to India Today TV. His tragic death highlights the ongoing plight of 180 Indian fishermen who remain imprisoned in Pakistan under similar circumstances, awaiting release. Alarmingly, this marks the eighth death of an Indian fisherman held in Pakistan over the last two years.
India has consistently urged Pakistan to expedite the release of these detainees. The issue gained further urgency earlier this year when, in April 2024, another Indian fisherman, Vinod Laxman Koal from Maharashtra, died in custody after being arrested in 2022 for entering Pakistani waters. Koal suffered a paralysis attack in March 2024 and passed away during treatment later that month.
As of a statement released on December 20, 2024, by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), there are currently 209 Indian fishermen detained in Pakistan. This figure includes 51 fishermen imprisoned since 2021, 130 since 2022, nine held in 2023, and 19 detained throughout 2024. Since 2014, 2,639 Indian fishermen have been repatriated from Pakistan.
This situation underscores the tense maritime relations between India and Pakistan and the pressing humanitarian concerns regarding the welfare and timely release of imprisoned fishermen. As diplomatic efforts continue, Babu’s death serves as a stark reminder of the urgency needed to address the grim conditions and bureaucratic delays faced by these individuals trapped in foreign prisons.
