Yash Raj Films (YRF) has secured the international distribution rights for the eagerly awaited historical drama “Chhaava.” This film stars Vicky Kaushal in the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, directed by Laxman Utekar. Originally set for a December 2024 release, “Chhaava” will now premiere worldwide on February 14, 2025. The revised release date was announced via YRF’s official social media platforms following a spectacular trailer launch at Mumbai’s iconic Plaza cinema.
Touted as a grand visual treat, the recently released trailer provides a captivating glimpse into the film’s ambitious scale. It delves into the journey of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as he assumes leadership following the demise of his father, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film’s high production values underscore YRF’s dedication to presenting a historical narrative that resonates with contemporary audiences.
During the trailer launch event, Vicky Kaushal reflected on his preparation for the physically demanding role. He shared, “The last action film I did was ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ (2019). Since then, I’ve been eagerly waiting to do action roles. This role was challenging as I had to learn horse riding and sword fighting. I trained for six months and gained 25 kgs, transforming from 80 kgs to 105 kgs. Joji and Pervez sir were instrumental in my training.”
Enhancing the film’s rich narrative is the musical score by Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman, adding emotional depth and grandeur. Apart from Vicky Kaushal, the movie features Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, and Diana Penty in pivotal roles.
The film’s casting attracted attention, particularly for Rashmika Mandanna, who was cast despite initial reservations due to her South Indian roots. Director Laxman Utekar emphasized her suitability for the role, stating, “Her eyes are so pure that aur koi Marathi maharani lag hi nahin sakti.”
