Breaking News: DRI’s Daring Seizure of Rs 32 Crore Meth Tablets from Assam and Tripura Shocks Nation
In a significant crackdown on organized drug syndicates in India’s North Eastern Region, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), with support from Assam Rifles personnel in Silchar, seized 26 kg of methamphetamine tablets on January 19, 2025. The illicit drugs, smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram, were discovered in Dwarband Bazar, Cachar District, Assam, within a specially constructed cavity of an Ashok Leyland truck. The confiscated methamphetamine is valued at Rs. 26 crore in the international drug market. One individual has been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
In a separate incident on January 20, 2025, DRI officials intercepted a truck on the outskirts of Agartala, Tripura, seizing 6 kg of methamphetamine worth Rs. 6 crore hidden beneath the dashboard. This operation led to the arrest of two individuals.
The DRI’s efforts to dismantle drug networks in the region have been relentless, accounting for 36 smuggling cases and 70 arrests since the financial year beginning in April 2024, including seven females. The agency has confiscated a staggering 231 kg of methamphetamine tablets, 16 kg of heroin, 1,375 kg of ganja, and 3.7 kg of hydroponic weed, amassing a total value of over Rs. 355 crore. Additionally, 32 vehicles, including 19 cars and 13 trucks used for drug transportation, have been seized.
A new trend in smuggling hydroponic weed, a type of marijuana grown in nutrient-rich water rather than soil, has emerged with air passengers attempting to bring it into North Eastern India. All cases are being prosecuted under the NDPS Act in competent courts as authorities continue their efforts to combat the drug menace.
