Tripura Celebrates Remarkable Economic Triumph: CM Manik Saha Hails Second-Highest GSDP in Northeast
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Tuesday that the state now boasts the second-highest Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) among the northeastern states. During a speech at the statehood day event held at Rabindra Bhavan, Saha credited this economic growth to the “double-engine” governance model, which refers to the alignment of state and central government policies.
Highlighting the cooperative relationship with the central government, Saha mentioned the assistance Tripura received during crises, such as the devastating floods in September last year and the evacuation of Tripura’s students from conflict-hit Manipur in May 2023, facilitated by a special flight arranged by the civil aviation minister.
According to Saha, Tripura is not just advancing in terms of GSDP but also in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), as cited in the NITI Aayog report for 2023-24. He outlined the state’s fiscal framework, noting an annual budget of approximately Rs 27,000 crore against a self-generated revenue of Rs 3,700 crore. After covering non-plan expenses, about Rs 10,000 crore is available for developmental initiatives, with 25% earmarked for the Tripura Tribal Areas District Council (TTAADC) and 10% for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). Nevertheless, he assured that development initiatives remain funded, bolstered by central government schemes.
Expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Saha emphasized the importance of securing ample allocations by presenting substantial proposals. He warned, however, of attempts by certain groups to disturb the peace in regions like Gandacherra, Kadamtala, and Kaiturbari. Yet, he remained confident in the government’s ability to maintain stability, noting the swift restoration of order in these areas.
