Empowering Voice: Urgent Call for Robust Press Infrastructure by Kohima Press Club
The Kohima Press Club (KPC) marked its 24th Foundation Day on January 20 at the APO Conference Hall, Kohima. The event celebrated a pivotal moment in the club’s journey, with veteran journalist and Sovima Village Council Chairman, Sebastian Zumvü, gracing the occasion as the special guest. In her presidential address, Alice Yhoshü described the day as a “landmark” and revealed plans for the club’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, including the launch of KPC’s official website, www.kohimapressclub.com, aimed at enhancing the club’s online presence and elevating journalistic professionalism.
Reflecting on KPC’s founding in 2001 by a small group of journalists to safeguard press rights, Yhoshü acknowledged the club’s growth to 68 members from both print and electronic media. She paid tribute to the foresight of the founding members for steering KPC to its current stature. Despite the absence of a permanent building after 24 years, she expressed optimism for a promising future, citing the state government’s approval of a land allotment in the New Secretariat area for a permanent Press Club building, announced by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on February 27, 2023.
Zumvü reminisced about the nascent stage of journalism in Nagaland during his tenure at the North East Herald and emphasized the need for KPC members to embrace technological advancements. He highlighted KPC’s evolution and suggested extending the current Executive Council’s term until the conclusion of the silver jubilee celebrations.
The event included remarks from KPC advisors, a musical performance, the General Secretary’s Report, and a vote of thanks. The celebration concluded with a traditional exchange of gifts among members, reinforcing their commitment to the journalistic ethics and goals encapsulated in KPC’s motto, “To Serve.” The gathering underscored the press’s indispensable role in fostering a responsible media landscape in Nagaland.
