Shocking Justice: Kolkata Court Delivers Death Sentence in RG Kar Rape-Murder Cases Verdict
The recent RG Kar Hospital case in West Bengal has been a focal point of public outrage, yet it is not the only case drawing severe legal repercussions in the region. In a parallel series of unsettling incidents, three separate cases of sexual assault and murder have resulted in death penalties being swiftly executed by fast-track courts.
In August 2023, a 16-year-old schoolgirl was tragically raped and murdered in Siliguri near Matigara police jurisdiction. The swift response by authorities led to the arrest of Mohammad Abbas, who confessed to the crime. In a landmark judgement, the Siliguri Court sentenced Abbas to death within 13 months. Special Public Prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee highlighted that the death penalty was intended as a societal deterrent to prevent similar egregious acts, citing sections 302 (murder) and section 6 of the POCSO Act.
Similarly, in December 2024, Dinbandhu Halder faced a death sentence from a Jangipur Court for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl during the Durga Puja festival in Farakka. The incident involved heinous acts of luring the child, followed by her assault and murder. His accomplice, Shubojit Haldar, received a life sentence. The court awarded the victim’s family a compensation of Rs 10 lakh, underscoring the brutality of the crime.
In another swift verdict, just two months after the RG Kar incident, a 19-year-old was sentenced to death in Joynagar for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl returning from tuition classes. Arrested within hours, Mostakin Sardar’s sentencing marked a speedy judicial response reflective of the community’s demand for justice.
These cases collectively signal a decisive judicial stand in West Bengal against sexual violence, with the courts acting rapidly to administer stern justice, aiming to deter future crimes and assure the public of legal retribution.
