KOHIMA, JANUARY 17 (MExN): The people of Nagaland are mourning the demise of Rongsenshilu Jamir, IPS (Retd.), the first Naga Inspector General of Police (IGP), who passed away at the age of 92 on January 16 at Eden Medical Centre, Dimapur. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio led the tributes, highlighting Rongsenshilu’s principled life and his dedication to serving the community. Jamir was not only a decorated officer, awarded the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service, but was also remembered for his profound kindness and compassion.
“In his passing, not only the Ao community, but the entire Naga community has lost a guardian and a father figure,” Chief Minister Rio stated, acknowledging Jamir’s immense contributions to Nagaland’s law enforcement and societal welfare. His legacy, Rio emphasized, will not be forgotten.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) also shared their grief, with President Chingwang Konyak paying tribute to Jamir as a dynamic figure who selflessly devoted himself to his duties even after retirement. Konyak remarked on Jamir’s enduring influence, stating, “His legacy of service will always be remembered by the people of Nagaland.”
Abu Metha, Secretary General of the NDPP and Jamir’s son-in-law, along with the family, received condolences from across the state. The NDPP conveyed its deep sorrow over the loss of a pioneering leader. “Jamir’s passing is not just a loss to his family, but to the entire Naga community. As the first Naga IGP, he will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people and his indelible impact on the State’s law enforcement history,” read their statement.
Rongsenshilu Jamir’s funeral service was conducted at 3rd Mile, Chekiye village on January 17, as the state of Nagaland bid farewell to a cherished leader whose contributions have left a lasting impact.
